Episode recap: With a title like “I Do” that can only mean one thing, we’re getting a wedding this episode. We’ve seen Jack’s wedding, and the honeymoon was over quickly. What fate awaits the soon-to-be newlyweds in this episode? Flashbacks introduce a woman walking down a hallway to the sounds of country music. A mystery woman? A new character? No, it’s Kate. The creators of this show sure made it seem like we were meeting someone new. It’s just Kate with a new hairdo and a new name—Monica. She’s about to marry a cop named Kevin and live happily ever after. Right? Her future husband is in the dark about her past. A fugitive like Kate can only be happy for so long before they have to run again.
Kate did a lot of running before she came to the island, from herself and her past. Killing her abusive stepfather didn’t bring her any peace, it just made her adept at staying one step ahead of law enforcement. So why did she settle down long enough to get married—to a cop no less? She was in love with Kevin and the normal life he could bring. She was willing to be normal long term if only the marshal would stop looking for her. Kate continues to make short, periodic phone calls to the marshal, asking, begging him to let her go. There’s no deal to be had as the marshal knows people like Kate don’t change. Sooner or later Kate will have to go back to her old ways.
On the island, Juliet is hoping Kate can convince Jack to do the surgery. With Colleen’s husband, Pickett, itching to make someone, namely Sawyer, pay for her death, convincing Jack to do the operation might be the only way to save everyone. An emotionally broken Kate still isn’t enough to change Jack’s mind. There has to be something that can change the good doctor’s mind. What would motivate him?
Jealousy. Out of all the tactics the Others tried on Jack, plain old-fashioned jealousy did the trick. Jack was either covertly let out of his cage by Alex or intentionally let out by someone else, leading to him seeing Kate and Sawyer on the TV screen in a rather intimate moment. Jack’s feelings for Kate have always been apparent, but when the person you’re in love with seems to be into someone else it can make you a little angry or resentful. In Jack’s case, he “seems” to be done worrying about everyone and instead looks out for his own interests. He finally agrees to operate on Ben, provided he honors his promise to let him go.
However, nothing ever goes smoothly on this island. Jack sabotages Ben’s surgery, threatening to let him bleed out if Kate and Sawyer aren’t released. With an hour head start, how far will Kate and Sawyer get? Who knows because the episode ends on a cliffhanger. Just kidding, I do know the outcome I just don’t remember all the details. But it’s fun watching all of this again. Please come back next week for recaps of episodes seven and eight.
