Episode recap: What happened to Michael? What made Michael betray the people who care about him and Walt? What was the trigger to make him turn? The answer came in three minutes. In 180 seconds, Michael came face-to-face with the one person who could make him do anything—Walt.
What Michael did and endured in his thirteen days away has been shrouded in mystery, but this episode peels back the layers. Way back in episode eleven, The Hunting Party, Michael forcibly took action. Taking a gun, locking John and Jack in the armory, as he went off into the jungle in pursuit of Walt. Having communicated with someone who claimed to be his son on the computer, Michael knows to head north. He stumbles upon one of the Others but is quickly overpowered as a larger group arrived.
The Others take Michael back to their camp, letting him see what they want him to see—primitive huts, dried fish for food, and a guarded hatch. Keeping up appearances is important, though the reason is unclear. All I can deduce is the Others didn’t want to reveal how sophisticated they really were or who they were. An inquisitive member of the group, Ms. Klugh, asks Michael a lot of questions about Walt—questions he can’t answer. Ms. Klugh rather astutely points out how little Michael knows about his son. Michael wasn’t a presence in Walt’s life until recently, but it doesn’t matter. His love for Walt has never wavered, despite all the obstacles.
In the present, Michael is running into more obstacles trying to prevent people other than Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley from joining the hunt for Walt. His logic, only the people who were in the hatch after Libby and Ana-Lucia’s death should go. They know the “truth” or Michael’s truth of what happened. Adding more people to the equation will complicate things, which is why Michael persuades Sayid not to come along. Sayid might have ulterior motives, wanting to kill Fake Henry instead of getting Walt back. Walt is Michael’s son and it’s his call who gets to go, which placates Sayid—briefly. Sayid, once trained in interrogating and breaking people, suspects Michael has been compromised.
Sayid is right to suspect Michael, as Ms. Klugh made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Secure Fake Henry’s release and bring back four people—Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley. If he does this, Michael and Walt will be let go—free to leave the island (via boat). Michael won’t agree to anything without seeing Walt first. He gets three minutes with Walt, enough time to reveal some secrets. The Others are not who they say they are, they’re pretending. Are the Others part of the Dharma Initiative experiment? Is it all a big test? Questions to be answered in another season.
One question that will get answered soon: whose side is Michael on? Sayid takes his suspicions to Jack, that Michael might be leading them into a trap. Why? Desperate people do desperate things, especially when it concerns their children. A plan to expose him will have to be put on hold. During the funeral for Ana-Lucia and Libby, Sun spots a sailboat! Salvation? Are they about to be rescued? I thought it when I first saw this episode and I still believe upon watching it again, rescue could not be that easy. It’s either a trap or a dead end. Every attempt at getting off the island or contacting others off the island has been extinguished. The raft was burned. Sayid’s radio equipment was destroyed. Boone was fatally injured trying to use the plane radio. The island only lets people go when it’s ready. Please come back in two weeks for recaps of episodes twenty-three and twenty-four.
