Lost ReWatch: Recon
Season 6, Episode 8 – with audio commentary
Hello, welcome to 4 Buckets, a community for musings on life, food, books, and pop culture. Pop down below and leave a comment, I promise I don’t bite.
Hero of the episode: Sawyer Zero of the episode: The Man in Black
Quote(s) of the episode: “I ain’t with anyone, Kate.”—Sawyer | “I gave them the opportunity to leave peacefully, and they didn’t take it. . .they’re convinced that they’re protecting the island from me, when, in fact, all I wanna do is leave.”—The Man in Black to Sawyer | “That’s very insightful coming from a dead man.”—Kate to the Man in Black | “I think we both know the guy I’m talking about is not really Locke.”—Sawyer to Widmore
Music vibes: Eerie and sad while Claire is gazing at a crib with a doll in it; frenetic when Sawyer chases a woman on the beach; threatening when Sawyer is taken to meet Charles Widmore; imposing drumbeats as Sawyer makes a deal with Widmore
Little things: Miles setting up Detective Ford on blind dates; a brief glimpse of Charlie’s brother, Liam, trying to bail him out at the police station; James tries to apologize to Charlotte, but she won’t hear it; Claire apologizes to Kate
Episode notebook:
Back to Claire’s camp in the jungle. Jin wants to leave before she gets back with Fake Locke, aka the Man in Black, but Sawyer resists.
Sawyer knows the real Locke is gone, but believes the imposter can help him get off the island. Jin won’t leave without Sun.
Fake Locke returns with people from the Temple, including Kate and Sayid.
Flash sideways to Sawyer working undercover as a cop. Miles is his partner.
Weird to see Sawyer, the con man we’ve grown to know, as a cop.
The Man in Black tells the temple group that those who stayed behind were killed by the black smoke.
Detective James Ford is looking for Anthony Cooper.
The Man in Black doesn’t like being challenged by Sawyer. He reveals to James that he’s the Smoke Monster.
Fake Locke is sending Sawyer to the other island to infiltrate the survivors from the Ajira flight. The Man in Black wants to use the plane to get off the island.
The return of Charlotte, the woman Miles set James up with.
James blows up at Charlotte after he catches her looking at something private.
In this timeline, James’ family still fell victim to con man Anthony Cooper.
Being back on Hydra Island brings back memories of being locked in the animal cage (season three episodes) for Sawyer.
Sayid doesn’t feel like himself; he doesn’t help Kate when she’s attacked by Claire, who knows she took Aaron off the island. Fake Locke steps in to help Kate.
Sawyer stunned by the sight of the Ajira plane on the beach and the sight of dead bodies. The remaining plane survivors are dead except for one woman named Zoe.
Miles knows James was lying about his recent trip; he knows Ford was in Sydney, Australia, and on Oceanic Flight 815. Miles doesn’t want to be partners anymore.
Zoe claims everyone was killed while she was out collecting wood.
Fake Locke admits to telling Claire the lie about the Others taking her baby. He needed to give her something to hate.
Sawyer realizes Zoe is a fraud and asks to be taken to the leader of her group.
The Man in Black reveals his mother had mental issues, problems that he’s still dealing with. A mother detached from reality, just like Claire is now.
Sawyer makes a deal with Widmore to get off the island, but breaks it immediately by telling Fake Locke the truth about his arrangement.
Detective Ford tells Miles the truth about his past.
Ford captures fugitive Kate.
Sawyer is still looking out for himself…and for Kate.
