Music vibes: sad at times, but also suspenseful when Sayid ventures into the jungle
Little things: Hurley, looking for something to do, creates a golf course. This leads to a golf tournament. They can forget they’re stranded on an island for just a little while. | Michael’s plan for showers. | Sayid fixing Danielle’s music box.
Episode notebook:
Sayid alone, looking at photographs. Who is the woman in the photos? He’s been away from the group for several days.
Sayid spots a cable on the beach. One end leads into the water and the other into the jungle. He chooses to follow the cable into the jungle. He gets caught in a trap and ends up hanging upside down.
Hurley noted they need something to do during downtime. He finds some golf clubs and creates a golf course.
Sayid is tied up. Someone is yelling, “Where is Alex?” at him in multiple languages.
The mystery woman is Danielle (R.I.P. Mira Furlan). The French woman on the distress call. She tortures Sayid for info. The torture reminds Sayid of his past.
First sighting of Ethan with the larger group. Now I know he wasn’t a passenger. I remember he was sent to observe the group, but eventually he kidnaps Claire. Why? That I’m not sure about.
Sayid tells Danielle about the crash, but she doesn’t believe him. If he’s part of a group, why is he alone? She thinks he’s one of the “Others.” The first time we hear about the “Others.” Who are they and why is Danielle so afraid of them?
The woman in Sayid’s photos is Nadia. He’s ashamed of what happened to her and his part in her torture. Was he in love with Nadia? Danielle can sense how much Nadia meant to Sayid. I’m pretty sure Nadia isn’t dead, but it’s several seasons before we find out.
Danielle is in deep pain. Alex was her child. What happened to Alex?
Danielle got into Sayid’s head. On his way back to the group, he hears voices in the jungle. Real or imagined?
Episode recap: Be careful what you wish for, you just might find it. Sayid left his fellow survivors in search of the French distress signal – and in search of the person he used to be. While staring at photos of a mystery woman, probably someone he loved, Sayid spots a thick, black cable on the beach. One end leads out into the ocean, the other into the jungle. Sayid heads into the jungle, determined to find answers. He will get them but not before finding himself ensnared in a trap, hanging upside down from a tree.
While Sayid is dangling from a tree, the rest of the group is trying to deal with day-to-day life. Jack makes house calls, with Sawyer and a hypochondriac with a rash. Frustration and boredom are starting to take over. No one has come to their rescue. Some days there aren’t things to do. Hurley has a solution – golf. I personally find playing or watching golf to be like watching grass grow. But if stranded on an island, with nothing to do and possibly no books (oh the horror), I would probably turn into Tiger Woods. What starts as a foursome between Jack, Michael, Hurley, and Charlie quickly turns into a large event with the rest of the survivors joining in—a welcome break from fighting for survival.
Sayid on the other hand might have to fight for survival if his captor, Danielle, doesn’t let him go. Sayid found what he was looking for, but not without a little pain. Danielle tortures Sayid with a little electroshock therapy, leading him to reminisce about his days in the Iraqi military. Days when he seemed to relish torturing dissidents for information. However, everyone has a limit, a line they can’t or won’t cross. For Sayid that was his childhood friend Nadia, who military officials believe has information on a high-profile bombing. Can Sayid torture a friend? Although Nadia seems like more than a friend. Sayid looks like he’s in love with her. Even Danielle could tell how much Nadia meant to him because it pained him to be asked about her.
Danielle is in pain, too. Pain from loneliness. Everyone she loved is gone. Pain from paranoia. She insists there are people on the island who wish her harm – the “Others.” The “Others,” a term that got thrown around a lot on this show. Who are the Others? Danielle isn’t sure, she’s only heard them whispering. Has she ever seen them?
Sayid isn’t sure what to think, but he knows Danielle isn’t some monster in the jungle. She’s just a person desperate to have a friend. Someone to talk to. She knows Sayid doesn’t want to be that person, but she leaves him with a warning – watch the people he’s with. Could there be an enemy among the survivors? Please keep reading, my recap for episode ten is posted.
