Hero of the episode: Sayid, for standing up to Sawyer
Zero of the episode: Sawyer, for being a jerk (I think this will be the first of many, it’s a while before he redeems himself)
Quote(s) of the episode: “Dude I’m starving but I’m nowhere near that hungry.” – Hurley when Jin offers him raw fish
Music vibes: Mysterious again, with a lot of strings and piano. Adventure music when our survivors go on a hike.
Little things: Sun having a small moment of defiance. She’s wearing a sweater with all, but one button done up. Jin yells at her to button up, which she does but as soon as he’s out of sight Sun undoes that one button.
Episode notebook:
They’ve got the radio, now what?
Our first glimpse into Charlie, learning via flashback that he’s a drug addict. He drew the attention of the flight attendants, leading him to run to the front section of the plane. Running to the front saved his life.
OMG, I forgot how shallow Shannon was. She sunbathes while everyone else is trying to gather supplies.
Sun looks sad. So, looking forward to her episode.
Walt finds handcuffs while looking for his dog. When this aired, I remembered thinking who is the criminal? I assumed Sawyer because he was such a jerk.
Unless you’re going to make the bold move of killing off a kid, why was such a young actor cast as Walt? Malcolm David Kelley was great as Walt, but he clearly had not gone through puberty yet. He had a growth spurt between seasons, how do you get around that?
Fight fight fight! The first between Sayid and Sawyer
Kate must know the guy with shrapnel in his abdomen.
Yet another hike. This time in search of a better spot to send a radio signal.
Wooo Sawyer’s got a gun. Comes in handy when he shoots a polar bear. I don’t remember if there was an explanation for the bear. But I could be wrong.
Survivors start to wonder why the injured man had a gun. Was he escorting a criminal?
Another distress call is blocking our survivors from getting help.
Episode recap: We start to learn little snippets about the survivors of flight 815. Charlie is a drug addict, who was going through severe withdrawal during the flight. Sun and Jin have marital problems; he seems to be exerting control over her and Sun is fighting against it. Walt, 10, is worried about his dog and his mother died recently, prompting Locke to make the insightful comment “You’re having a bad month.” Michael, Walt’s father, is struggling to connect with his son. Sawyer and Sayid come to blows, each thinking the other was the criminal being escorted by the marshal.
The big reveal, via flashback, that Kate was the one in handcuffs/shackles was surprising. But is she a criminal? I remember thinking Sawyer was the criminal. All signs pointed to Sawyer because of how he’s presented to us – a brooding bad boy with a cigarette in his mouth. To start, Kate’s character had the innocent girl next door look, no way she’s a criminal. In the end, a smart move by the show creators to make Kate the criminal. But is she dangerous?
The injured marshal certainly thinks so. He kept waking up while Jack was trying to treat him, uttering gibberish. But in a very lucid moment, he says, “Where is she?”
With all this character development, we still managed to get a bit of an adventure story. The unlikely group of Kate, Sayid, Sawyer, Shannon, Boone, and Charlie set off into the jungle, in search of high ground and the perfect clear spot to broadcast a distress signal from the radio. They can’t because a distress signal, in French, is already being broadcast – for the past 16 years. That’s a doozy. Prompting Charlie to say what everyone is thinking “Guys where are we?” I’d say the Twilight Zone. Please come back next Thursday for episodes three and four!
